KitKat Mint Dark Chocolate Minis
I wonder why Christmas is so heavily associated with mint. Many of the special, limited-edition candies are mint, including the annual mint chocolate M&Ms. This is the first year in my memory that dark chocolate has passed milk chocolate in the limited edition sugarfest that is the holidays. I love this time of year.
Anyway, KitKat has come out with a mint dark chocolate mini this year. The chocolate is sweet and slightly bitter with a rather waxy texture. It’s not a fantastic chocolate, but it’s decent, the sort of thing one expects in a mass-market candy. It would be nice if the mint flavor was stronger, but it tastes fresh. The wafers are just what you find in a standard KitKat – and that’s where we run into a problem. The flavors and texture of the chocolate completely overwhelms the wafers, so that they almost seem like an afterthought. Given that people buy KitKat because of the cookies, that’s a downside.

The dark chocolate mint Kit-Kats are “to die for”. They are very light, crispy and have a considerable amount of chocolate coating, are not overly sweet, with just the right amount of mint added. I love dark chocolate and mint. Most commercial candy products are too sweet for me so I don’t like many of them. My favorite dark chocolate is the Droste 72%. I can eat a peppermint patty but would like it coated with twice as much dark chocolate. I love the wafer crispiness of Kit-Kats but don’t like milk chocolate that much and was surprised to see these before Christmas. I didn’t expect them to be very good…BUT after trying them went back to the store and bought TEN bags! They were on sale at Target for $1.77. They freeze very well….taste exactly the same when thawed.
