Hershey’s Rally

No picture just yet.

I got to visit a few Holy Grail spots for chocolate lovers this Saturday – the Hershey store and M&M World on Times Square.  The M&M World was kind of underwhelming -it’s huge, but it’s based almost 100% on cheap junk with those stupid M&M characters on it, with nothing particularly intriguing in the actual consumables.  They were really pushing these plastic M&M dispensers featuring the green M&M dressed as a sexy(?) Statue of Liberty for $20.  I managed to resist, despite being approached and encouraged to buy one about five times.  I did purchase some overpriced novelty color M&Ms in a spiffy box, though.  I know they taste exactly the same, but hey!  They’re violet!  And some other colors.  I’m a sucker for packaging.

The Hershey store, though, yielded some goodies, and I’ll be sharing them over the next few entries.  It was small, with narrow aisles, and it was packed to the gills.  It was a devil getting around.  Still, I managed to get ahold of some edible goodies and a nifty new sweatshirt with “Hershey’s” plastered across the front.  I was mightily pleased and still am.  It made up for the fact that I couldn’t get any good stuff at the convention in Baltimore.

One of the things I picked up was a four-pack of Hershey’s Rally bars.  These are a revival of a bar that was discontinued in the US in the mid-1970s (but continues to be sold in other countries, such as Australia).  A nougat center is surrounded by a peanut-caramel layer, which is then covered with mockolate.  It would have been nice to have actual chocolate, but Hershey’s mockolate isn’t as bad as the stuff from other brands.  The flavor reminds me of a Baby Ruth – slightly dry, very nutty, with a sweet and salty hit.  The texture is crumbly and chewy.  The nougat holds up for longer than I would have expected.  It is a little messy to eat – the mockolate tends to flake off when I’m taking a bite, sprinkling itself across my shirt.  The bar is also really big – it doesn’t look huge, but one bar lasts for a long time.  It was a substantial snack, and I was on a sugar high by the end.

LOWDOWN: I have to go to Hershey, Pennsylvania.  Plus the Rally bar is good.

SCORE: 8 out of 10

Purchased at: Hershey Store, NYC

Geez! At least the Vegas M&M store has a sweet 3D movie.

Las Vegas also has an M&M store that might be a bit better than the one in NYC. I have been to Hershey (aka Mecca for chocolate lovers)a number of times and it is certainly worth the trip. Be sure to go through Chocolate World and also enjoy the kiss shaped street lights throughout the town. Beautiful place to visit!

[...] I picked up this Rally Bar at Hershey’s Chocolate World last month. The only place I know these are being sold is at the Hershey’s stores, as a few other candy bloggers have mentioned. (Hershey’s Insider, Jim’s Chocolate Mission & Sugar Hog.) [...]
