Dove Peppermint Bark Promises
This morning, I went to open the curtains as I chatted to the birds. “You’d like some light, wouldn’t… whoa!” I wasn’t expecting snow. First sticking snow of the season! Time for our elderly dog to make snow angels, rolling around on her back, legs flailing, eyes shut in bliss. Snow brings out the puppy in her.
What better, then, but a snow-capped candy? Dove’s peppermint bark comes in two forms – the little promises, and a very different slab. I haven’t tried the slab form yet, but I think it’s different enough to merit its own entry. This one is for Promises.
The bottom half of each piece is made of dark chocolate. The top half is white chocolate (not white confection!) with bits of crushed-up peppermint candy in it. I was pleased to see that it was really candy bits, and not the red non-pareilles that seem to be standard for other peppermint bark. The chocolate is good quality, as I expect from Dove, and it produces a satisfying snap when bitten. The dark chocolate does overwhelm the more delicate flavors of the white, with the first impression being somewhat sharp and bitter, followed by a more mellow, sweeter mintiness. The bits of candy add a nice texture as well as providing flavor. All together, this candy is much less sweet than I expected, which is a good thing. The package makes it look like the dark chocolate layer is much thinner, and I was a little worried about the uber-sweetness white chocolate can have. It turned out to be just fine.
