Brach’s Harvest Mix
My, my. October 23rd, and I haven’t written a thing about my seasonal addiction, Harvest Mix. In addition to the standard candy corn, it includes Indian corn and mallowcream pumpkins. The three candies are very sweet, smooth and tender, touched with the taste of honey.
My favorite is probably the Indian corn. The brown end of the candy is chocolate flavored, giving it a nice balance, rather than just pure sweet (that word’s getting a workout today). Ever since I was little, I’ve eaten the tri-colored corn one color at a time. The pumpkins are to be eaten in little bites, scraping off layers of candy a bit at a time. If I try to eat them in one bite, I taste the honey more, but it also brings home just how many simple carbs I’m putting into my body. In other words, too sweet.
Buying this can be a gamble. Too often, I’ve bought a package only to find that the whole thing is stuck together and gooey, the candy damp and sticky. Most of the time, I can tell whether or not this is the case, but I have been unpleasantly surprised more than once. I’m not sure what causes it to go goopy sometimes, although my guess is that it has something to do with the candy being exposed to too much moisture or other weather conditions. Whatever it is, it can turn a great candy into something mediocre at best.
SCORE: 8 out of 10
Purchased at: Kroger
Price: 99 cents

These are my favorites too!
I’ve never gotten a gooey/sticky beg before though. Hmmm. Does it happen to you often?
October 23rd, 2006 at 1:23 pmI haven’t had any this year. Every now and then there seems to be batches. That’s why I wonder if it’s a moisture thing, since it seems to be all the bags on the shelf or none.

I love candy corn and have since I was little, and the Mellowcreme Pumpkins — don’t get me started. A fave since childhood — like little spheres of solidified cake frosting (butterscotch flavored), and yes, I too nibble them daintily, to make them last, rather than consume the whole thing in one mouthful.
October 31st, 2006 at 6:35 pmSometimes if you leave it in a hot car, it will kind of melt and then it sticks together. I have found candy sitting in a hot spot in a store (such as a sunny window) that can cause this too.
November 28th, 2006 at 4:53 pmDoes anybody know if the candy corn/mellow creme mix with the little cider jug candy is available anywhere?
October 18th, 2007 at 2:11 pmI believe this is not the Harvest Mix. This is the Autumn mix. The Harvest Mix, which I love and can’t seem to find this year, also has bats and cider jugs and cats, in chocolate, yellow and orange.
November 2nd, 2007 at 9:09 amI have been searching and searching for the Autumn mix with the bats, cier jugs, cats in chocolate, yellow, organge and maple. Does anybody know anything about this mix. It’s the second year I’ve not been able to find them.
September 28th, 2008 at 9:01 pmI haven’t seen the mix lately. Last year I saw it on the clearance shelf at CVS after Halloween, but I don’t remember actually seeing them on the shelf. I wish I could find them – I used to like the cider jugs.
September 28th, 2008 at 10:51 pmWhen I was a young man …
(am 43 now), my friends and I used to love the harvest mix. It had the bats, jugs, cats … oh, and my favorite – ears of corn – but in Texas I have not been able to find that mixture. This pathetic ‘fall harvest’ with the three ‘candy corn’ type candies are OK but I can’t eat but maybe 20 or 25 before I’m tired of the flavor. I wish I could find the old Harvest Mix of old…
October 23rd, 2008 at 8:20 pmQuick update! Here is a site where you can get the (I goofed on the name earlier) ‘Brach’s Assorted Halloween Mellowcremes’: http://www.typetive.com/candyblog/item/brachs_chocolate_candy_corn/
Have a happy and safe holloween!
October 23rd, 2008 at 8:22 pmBeen a longtime lover of the Brach’s mellowcreme pumpkins, candy corn and “Assorted Halloween Mellowcremes” (this is the one with some bananas, chocs, caramels and used to be lemon). This year’s crop tasted less than good. Studying the pkg, I see that Brach’s is no longer Brach’s but is Farley’s and Sather’s. My past experience with mellowcremes made by these folks has never been good and explained to me why this year’s crop was poor. I know it’s just sugar, but Brach’s always had a characteristicly superior flavor. F&S brand has always tasted like the poor knockoff it is/was.I even wrote the F&S folks to tell them of my displeasure with the NEW Brach’s. They wrote back a long reply about crystallization, etc. Sorry, but the Brach’s flavor is apparently just gone and I fear, forever. These folks just don’t make this little confection the same way it used to be. They can say what they want, but it is not the same and is not as good.
